Recrop

so we got a second opinion and the vet said his crop is way to long and that the previous vet did not do much to help by leaving 100% of the length and he would have another chance in them standing if we get them recropped to 66%-75% of the length. lets pray for king and hopefully this works out

Do NOT get them re-cropped! With a long crop you just need to post longer. Find a method that works and keep at it.

Have you tried Elasticon tape? That’s what I used.

Are there any members near Miami that could help out? @Tropicalbri's do you know any members/dobie owners in that area?

Absolutely nothing works he hasn't made any progress w posting and so far the only vet that has given me actually advice as the previous one just said trust me he'll have them standing in no time and they haven't even made a bit of progress. Posting the long crop isn't working out and 2 different vets said it was the best option and that it's happened before

You can't expect to make progress on a show crop this soon these things take time. This pup in particular had set backs with his illness. Now that he is well, he needs proper posting for what could be a long time. Take a look at google images at some show crops. Kings ears are not too long.

I’m shocked these vets are recommending a re-crop. The only thing a re-crop (shortening the length) would do is knock off maybe 2-3 months at the end. You’d still be doing everything that you need to be doing now.

Was you breeder local? Can’t they help?

his crop is extremely long as the previous vet really only cut the back of his ear and didn't really listen to what i wanted i didnt want a long show crop but thats what she gave him

the breeder is local but the person that did his crops passed.

Oh man... How old is King now? I wouldn't expect that shortening his crop would make any of the problems that you are having go away. You are still going to have to find a way to get his posts from being dislodged and reduce his irritation. Poor guy. My advice is still to take pictures or a video of your posting process and discuss it here. Does your breeder have any experience posting? We all want to help. How are his ears looking today? Can you send a pic?

A good cropping vet would take your request into consideration but would do the crop to match the dog’s head and body. My dog also has a full length crop with only the back and bell altered. I was done posting at 8 months and that’s with 2 separate weeks of not posting (1 week off due to ear infection and and a month later another week off for vaca (did not trust anyone posting her)) .

Were you told that any Doberman standard crop would require continuous posting until they are 7 months of age at the minimum?

I do agree, don't get them recropped. His crop looks fine to me and you just have to have patience and be consistent for the time it takes.

Who did the crop? If you would rather pm me with that info please do. I can drive up to Miami once a week to post his ears if you would like me to. Please post a picture of his crop if you don’t mind.

I will be happy to post them and show you how. I can probably drive up every 5 days to do the posting if you want!

very much appreciated everyone ! my parents and i made the decision to go through w the recrop a long crop isn't what we wanted in the first place. his ears are cropped to 100% of its length and i wanted his ears cropped @ a 66%-70% of length.

Well, I can only wish you and the pup the best with this decision. Keep us updated and lets us know if you have further questions. Just remember you can not post raw ears, so just make sure they are heal again before posting. Hopefully the vet will tape them up to a cup because he is a bit old now to not be posting. GL with everything!

I am available if you want me to put the ears in a cup to heal until sutures are removed and to help you with posting. I do it at our vet hospital all the time. Just let me know! Good luck with the new crop. Wishing only the best for you and King.

thank you so much King and I appreciate it tremendously this isn't easy for any of us putting him under again but i have to say that i'm doing this in his best interest i know that ear infections have a higher risk w his ears down

How old is he now?
How old was he when cropped? Does the bell stand and just the tops flop or iscthe bell not standing at all?

Re-cropping ears after nearly losing the same dog to parvovirus as a puppy. Just wow. Hopefully you get the 66%-70% ear length this time around.
