Excessive drooling on car rides

Too much weight is always hard on joints. The good thing with pups is even if they get a little chunky, it doesn't last long. They grow sooooo fast. Chunky today, skinny tomorrow.

Lol yes I have noticed that. Also he has gone out with me in the vehicles since 12 weeks of age. He doesn’t whine and loves getting to the places we go. But wondering if he will grow out of this serious drooling and saliva just faling out the mouth. I realize it’s a anxiety thing and thought he would be used to riding in the vehicle by now but he just started the drooling thing like last week. Think he will grow out of this? I hear some do.

Dobes don't drool much at all. I've seen just a few drips when salivating over food. Not sure what's going on in your case. I guess every animal is different.

Well a few others had the problem with their dobe in the car over on the doberman owner group on facebook. It only starts when in the truck. He used to puke but looks like that went away and now just heavy drooling and pooring out the mouth took its place. Towel blanket is soaked. Kind of like when hey drink water and walk away and it just dumps out the mouth well in this case its horrible spit dumping out. Goes away when he gets out. Some others I talked to said anxiety riding in the vehicle or a bit of sickness and trying to not puke so the mouth is over watering. He just started this so I really hope over time he gets better.

Not sure if location in the vehicle makes a difference. Our Standard Poodle puppy will drool like that when he rides in the back of my wife’s SUV, In a kennel. But his kennel in my dog van is right behind the drivers seat and he doesn’t drool in the van.

Yea I have heard that location can matter. He rides in front next to me in truck. Still drooling like a mad bulldog. Guess I will see over time if it gets better.

The drooling threw me off, but the puking sounds like motion sickness. I think someone here has a dog that does that too just can't recall who...

I will make a video of it next time and share it. Just puddles of it. Lol
Oh okay. So you've really got something going on there. Hmm. I'd say it's anxiety. My Dobe exhibits a small amount of drool sometimes due to nail trimming.

It may also be because in my wife’s SUV he is the only dog in the car. My van has four kennels and his buddy Blaze is right next to him behind the passenger side so maybe it causes him to have less anxiety.

Paige used to drool like that. It is due to anxiety. The more exposure to car rides the better. Short frequent trips and trips to fun places should help phase out the drooling completely. I also would encourage staying in a down position when the car is moving to lower the sickness/anxiety levels from looking outside at the fast moving world.

I have to keep a bath towel under Grace....and a seat cover....and a hand towel to wipe with...and that's to go just across town...she hates the car...the whining never stops...tried front and back seat, face forward and back...now it's the front seat with head and paw on my arm or we don't go...I'm too old to say different!:banghead:

Thanks. Yea he usually lays down right away when he gets in cause he doesn’t look around when moving. The photo was taken right after we got to the park. We have been going in the vehicle from day one and he is now 5 months. I am hoping it does eventually go away. We drive everywhere together short trips to parks and fun places and to visit home depot cause they love him there. Lol

lol same. He used to whine in the beginning but now doesn’t anymore. He also puked in the beginning but that stopped and now it’s the drooling. Maybe just the final phase before eventually he is fine? Guess we will see. Someone told me there dobe got better around 9 months.

No way. I thought it was melting ice and was going to make a joke that it was drool...but it really is drool? Poor pup (and poor car!). Hopefully everyone can help figure this out.

I would add that maybe you could go into the car and not drive anywhere. Just hang out for a few minutes. Maybe feed meals in there? Or sit in the backseat and play with a toy? Does he have a toy in the car? I keep an elk antler only in the car. He loves it and it's the only place he gets it. If he is food motivated you could use food items to make him enjoy it more.

Good idea. Then after that is done for a few days or weeks, you could start the engine and just sit in the vehicle and idle but not drive anywhere. I'm not pro-idling in vehicles, but this would be a legitimate use.
