Experts in the breed do not use pain meds or cones, in my experience. The norm just after cropping is to have the ears up in a setup with styrofoam cup or other device on top of head and the ears taped to it so that the incisions are not covered or touched by tape – until the incisions are healed. Some people just leave the ears down until the incisions are healed.
Klaus' ears look to have the stitches out and the incisions are almost healed.
If I were you, I would use less tape, while having the ears secured as well as possible to the posts. The norm is two pieces of tape – one at the tip of the ear and one at the skull level. It is important to have good tape – both for adequate adhering qualities and for breathability. I understand you are not able to get that tape until a couple weeks from now, or the glue.
Is the tape you're using pretty sticky? Does it adhere the ear to the post well? I would just use two pieces, like I said. Can you buy any proper, safe adhesive anywhere – to apply to your posts so the ears stick to them? I have never used tape personally, but it might help you in this case. You just need to also have a safe adhesive remover.
Are you backtaping the posts to get them to stick to the ear? This can successfully take place of the adhesive use.
It looks like you have wrapped the tampon with tape or something so that it does not irritate the inside of the ear? Good. Actually, with my previous Dobe, I used tampons and did not wrap them with anything. He was not irritated by the posts to a significant degree. I do remember, though, that I dealt with irritation and possible moisture from infection due to the irritation inside the ear. Fortunately, this was near the end of his posting career, and I was able to stop posting.
The norm is for Dobes to accept the posts after a short period of time and not to mess with them. That really is the norm – no pain meds or cones.
I would get them posted with the two pieces of tape, and change the tape often – alternating the position of the tapes so where you taped last time is uncovered the next time. This, until the incision is healed. I know you will keep a close eye on things to watch for infection.
