Eye colour

Quinn

New Member
Hi im new here although i have been floating around the forum for awhile.

When we got our pup quinn he had that "puppy eye colour" like a greyish colour.

My question is did your pups eyes change colour at the same rate. As quinn has 1 eye that is now brown and his other eye is still a puppy colour (it doesnt bother us as we think it looks cute) he is only 12 weeks on wednesday.

Im just cruiouse to see if the other eye will change to brown over time.

Welcome to DCF from the West Country :ntmy:

Oh my gosh, you have the cutest pup....ever! That face

Looks like he's going to have some really dark brown, solid eyes....nice! It takes awhile to uncover puppies' "true" eye colour. So hopefully the other eye will catch up and change to that lovely dark brown.

Thanks for the reply I'll wait all see how his eyes turn out

He Get gets very serious looking when hes out on his short walks.

You may be looking at the 4 month mark, possibly.

He's very cute, you must be very proud :)

I'll post another pic in 4 week to see for changes

We took him to a puppy hour yesterday all the other pups were playing and he was acting like it would ruin his street cred and just hung around with the other owner getting attention untill 5 mins before the ends and then he tried to get involved with the group . He loves his home comforts.

Welcome from Minnesota! :welcome:

What a handsome boy and I'm sure his eyes will both darken more, even though I've never seen them change at a different pace like that.

I forgot to mention, do keep up with the puppy class. Dobes like to observe before getting into the action. The doggie interaction at a young age is so critical so he doesn't fear other dogs later.

We have him booked on for an 8 week long puppy OB couse but we couldn't get on it till the end of October unfortunately as they were fully booked up. So we take him to puppy hour till the classes start... he did make friends with a little boston terrier it was like little and large lol

Super! It really pays off! We did a lot of this with Kaiser. But we had never really taken him into big crowds of ppl. One day our Dobie friend talked us into going to a major pet event in the city. I thought we would last maybe 20 minutes. We were there 2 hours and he was amazing the whole time! Great with ppl and pets big and small! Moments like that are so rewarding and reassuring.

I'd love to do that with quinn when he gets bigger! I cant wait to start classes with him he seems to pick things up quite quickly... as soon as he hears the treat bag hes already ran round and sat down before you can ask him to sit... he was worth the 5 year wait lol

I know it's early days still, but any change? I guess if the other eye doesn't change then it might be worth having your vet take a look. I know that in some breeds it's common for dogs to have different coloured eyes, like the Siberian Husky and the Alaskan Malamute. As for Dobes, I'm really not sure. Did you notice if one of his parents had different coloured eyes? Maybe it was hereditary. Idk.
I would definitely want to rule out any health issues, first and foremost. I don't want to freak you out by saying have his eyes checked over but personally if he was mine I'd let the vet take a look and when you know that he's fine then you know you have a dog with heterochomia.

They still look the same no change. I Cant really tell to look at, its mainly on photos. I didnt really notice his mums eyes and i didn't meet his dad we were hoping to get a pup from the dads breeder but they were all reserved so we knew of the dad just never met him in person. Both parents were fully health tested hips eye and vwd and the rest. Ill ask the vets next time we take him

I think it depends how the light shines on his iris

Interesting... Rubie's eyes didn't change much from when we picked her up, at about 10 weeks, to now at almost 2yrs. She has the bright caramel that I'm partial to. Maybe your boy will have one of each? :D

What is it: In the Red & Rust Dobes the eye color should match the markings, and in the Black & Rust, as dark an eye as possible is preferred?

""Eyes almond shaped, moderately deep set, with vigorous, energetic expression. Iris, of uniform color, ranging from medium to darkest brown in black dogs; in reds, blues, and fawns the color of the iris blends with that of the markings, the darkest shade being preferable in every case"

The reason the darker eye is preferred is because it does not reflect light as much in the dark therefore making them harder to be seen. The lighter the eye the easier for light to reflect and reveal the dogs position.

Ah okay. Darkest color preferred in every case – not just in the Black and Tans. Thanks.
