Doberman found near Bemidji Minnesota

I heard yesterday that a mutual friends hunting party found this poor red boy out wandering in the woods when they were hunting. Apparently he stuck very close to the people and when the weekend was over they couldn't leave him out there alone so they brought him back home with them and he's staying in a town near here. I'm guessing he could have been lost if he was with another hunting party, but it's really hard to know for sure.

A lady who was in the hunting party is going to get me more info today but if any of you like MeadowCat or Poppy want to get this out in some of the other circles it might help if the owners are looking for him.

I told them that if the owner wasn't found or if they didn't plan to keep him (if the owner isn't found) I'll try to find a way to get him down to the rescue in Minneapolis so he can be properly placed.

Oh how awful! I'm glad someone found him before he froze or starved. Poor baby must be terrified!! How cute he clung to the hunters, though :)

I'll keep him in my prayers that his family is found, or he is placed in a proper rescue.

Thanks for getting the word out, Jan. keep us posted, or I'll worry about this little redhead.

Awesome that your friends took such an interest in the poor guy! For $100-$300 depending on what brand name you go for you can get dog gps tracking collars. Worth their weight in GOLD.

Hope they find his caring owner or get him a better home!!! Thanks for sharing.

Oh I just can't imagine the poor thing being lost in the woods on these cold nights we've had...

I asked to see if anyone had checked for a chip too and if not it would be a good place to start.

I'll definitely keep everyone posted when I hear more.

Ha! This story reminds me of a book that the neighbor kids just bought me. It's called "Max The dog that refused to die" It's a story about a doberman that got lost from his owners while they were out on a walk in the woods. I just hope this little red guy has a happy ending, just like the book.:fingersx:

Well I haven't heard back from the original lady yet, but I talked to a lady from the dog training assn. over there where he was found and when she asked me the specific area she said "OMG, thank goodness those hunters took him in". She said that almost all of the dogs right there (it's a reservation) live short horrible lives and they are all chained outside all the time or just left to run loose and fend for themselves. I shudder at the thought... :(

So I will message the lady from the hunting party again to tell her that and see where the people who have him want to go from there, but they're very clear on the fact that if they don't want to keep him we'll get him down to the rescue to find him a good forever home.

Reservations are notoriously bad for dogs. Doubly glad this boy was found.

FYI - If it is a reservation, they shouldn't have been hunting there without permission. Tribes have complete sovereignty over all tribal lands (reservations). They alone decide what happens to those who violate their laws. You no longer have US civil rights or Constitutional protections when you enter tribal lands. They're usually decent about it but sometimes want to make an example of people disrespecting their lands. if you think US jails are bad, you really, really don't want to spend even one day in a jail on Native land...and there are at least 76 of those jails.

Oh I know and I know this lady is very reputable and they'd never go on tribal land, but she said they were near there so I'm guessing perhaps the dog wandered off the reservation trying to find some food and affection. I should clarify that I'm in no way trying to be derogatory to the Native American's, but I can't stand to see any dog in poor conditions no matter who it is and it happens in all walks of life.

yeah around here in northern mn our property often borders reservation property...we live about 2 miles from the line. So it is pretty easy to have a dog wonder off the reservation property.

Didn't think anyone was being derogatory! Not trying to imply that at all!!!

Just wanted to make sure people like the hunters were aware that tribes often take a much stronger view against trespassing and really, really strong resentment against illegal hunting on their lands. It may not be the slap on the wrist fine that we would expect in most places. Penalties also depend a lot more on if the tribe has received what they wanted from the US gov recently or not. Local neighbors usually treat neighbors as they would any other neighbor on the rez. That may not always meet with local laws/customs outside the rez but there's seldom an offense meant by it unless you just get a lousy neighbor on the rez.

Not uncommon for people to take jobs at casinos on Native land and have no idea that their state or federal labor laws no longer apply and things like that. Totally just an FYI...

Oh goodness I didn't think you were implying that, but a lot of people read these threads who are non-members, so I don't want it to look wrong to anyone at all. :)

Wow, it really is a big area down there, isn't it? Yes, I agree that a dog can wander a long way in areas like that. I have word out in a quite a few places now just to make sure that if someone did lose their dog they can have a lead to find it and I think Kathy is a good one to help keep an eye out too since she lives in the area and is so involved in the dog world.
