Burglary Suspect Attacked By Dogs After Hiding In Dog House

Woman recovering after breaking into home, bitten by dogs, police say

A woman is recovering in a Fort Worth hospital after police say she broke into a home, ran into a man's backyard, hid in a dog house and was attacked by the dogs.
Police said a man called police in the 3600-block of James Avenue when his neighbor, Amanda Moore, told him a woman just broke into her house then ran into his backyard.

"I heard a noise in my middle bedroom, and all of a sudden, my bedroom door opened, and there was a lady in my hallway," Moore said. "I woke up and she [saw] me, she ran back out the window and went into the neighbor's backyard."

That neighbor is Jerry Gambino who had let his dogs into the backyard. He heard the commotion and went outside to see the suspect inside his dog house, with his three dogs inside as well.

"Whenever I came back here, all three dogs were in the dog house and I saw her legs sticking out, I was yanking the dogs out by the tail, at least if I pull them by the tail, they're going to either back up or try to bite me."

Police said the woman had injuries to her lip and hand, but were not life threatening.

No one else was injured.

I wonder what would happen if that happened here in the UK? I should imagine that the dogs would probably be destroyed...

I know the law here is if a dog attacks someone in defense of its own life or to protect its owner, especially on private property, it can't be destroyed or labelled as a dangerous dog. Some sense at least, considering all the BSL prejudice in Germany.

That's what I like to see! How dumb is that to run and hide in the dog house? :D

I know the BSL laws in TX can be pretty strict - especially for Pits, but I'm not sure if DFW is one of those areas. I'm glad the law went the right way anyway.

If you don't mind, I'd like to move this to the Canine News section.

If the UK implements that kind of a law... that would just be ridiculous. Do they at least consider the reasons for a dog bite? Or just say the dog bit someone, regardless of whether criminal or not, it's time to put it to sleep?

The way I'm reading into it, I can't see even see anything which says that dogs will be free to act as a deterrent on private land as opposed to being muzzled in public, almost like they don't want a guarding dog full stop

I mean, if your dog doesn't act strong and angry at strangers approaching your property, then how is he/she a threat deterrent

Here's the list of consultees :

And an example of a consultation response from the NHS (security division)

Doesn't make for pleasant reading.

Here we are are thinking the burglar should have received a Darwin Award, but it may turn out she was just ahead of her time :D

I think there was a lot of outrage when an owner wasn't prosecuted for a young child being bitten by a dog on the owners property. The child had left their own garden and entered another when the dog bit. No mention of the fact that the parents didn't even know the very young child had left their garden :/

There's lots of silly laws about protecting your home such as people being prosecuted for assaulting a burglar. Ridiculous.

I will be fuming if the law extends to private property. While I didn't get indi to be a guard dog, I would hope she would protect me during a break in. I wouldn't cope with being told my dogs had to be destroyed over that.

That's pretty f***ed up. I would say that postal service workers have a right to be safe, but in that the mail box shouldn't be anywhere near a dog i.e. front lawn or somewhere out of the dog's reach, or that the owners look into getting a PO box. That is beyond ridiculous to say that your dog can't protect you inside your own home. If someone came to attack me in a place where law might have my dog destroyed and Ashra bit them, I'd finish the job and hide the body :bat:

Between this thread and the gun thread it seems the government in the UK and Auusieland want crooks to have as much advantage as possible.
At the same time wanting good tax paying citizens to just bend over

.
About as dumb as the crook who sees a large doggy door as an entrance to your home, without stopping to ask them self why that damn dog door is so big:)

Erm, Australia doesn't have stupid laws like this concerning dogs on private property... in fact, if you have a dangerous dog sign posted up, you cannot be held accountable for what happens to trespassers.

Yeah, you just can't have a gun to defend yourself:)

Got to agree with this, can't say I like our.government too much..

I should also add to the dog laws I mentioned above regarding private property; a dog is given allowances for attacking under provocation (whether harassed by someone, inside a vehicle, or any uncontrolled animals that approach you).
